Where am I going?
Highlight Hiker Blog
November 14, 2020
In a few days we’re going to find ourselves smack dab in the middle of National Take a Hike Day! Are you prepared? Do you need some suggestions about where to go in northern New Jersey? You’ve come to the right place! Whether it’s a short trip on your lunch break, or an all day excursion, I have a short list of great trails for you to enjoy on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.
Short and Sweet
Short on time? Looking for a quick, easy trail that doesn’t require much effort but long on views? Head over to Continental Soldier Park in Mahwah, NJ. Behind the field and playground you’ll be able to catch the unmarked trail that circles Lake Henry. Simple, easy terrain with two bridge crossings and countless photo stops. Dog friendly.
Short but Challenging
Looking for a great trail where you’ll get a good workout in a short period of time? Head over to the gorgeous Fuller Mountain Preserve (Warwick, NY) and hike up Round Hill on the orange blaze. Want to make a half day out of it? Try the longer and more challenging green blaze on your way down from the panoramic scenic view.
Half Day/Half Tough
The Cooper Union Trail in Ringwood State Park is a moderate hike with pretty views of Wanaque Reservoir atop Governor Mountain. Park at Shepard Lake and hike to the trail head via the Cupsaw Brook Trail. Or, park at the pull-off on Morris Road and road walk about 1/2 mile west to the trail crossing.
Short Black Diamond
So you want adventure but only if it’s under three hours? Climb the State Line Trail at Abram S. Hewitt State Park. It’s a 1200’ climb in approximately one mile. Either you’re really athletic, or you’re a glutton for punishment! I KID! I KID! It’s really a terrific hike. Bring your trekking poles. You’ll be glad you did. PS. I did this trail without poles and was fine, just slower.
All Day Beauty
Despite of the long climb to the trail head over Ramapo Mountain, The Historic Cannonball Trail is everything a hiker wants from a full day trip: stunning views over moderate terrain in mixed woods, opportunities for scenic views, points of interest, historical significance and a highway crossing on a pedestrian bridge. Wear comfortable footwear, bring a lunch and your camera. You’ll love this trail!
Best Ridge Walk
If there’s one thing I love, it’s a ridge walk! You can’t beat the feeling of walking along the spine of a mountain! For the best of the best, park at P5 on Stephens Road, and walk to Hanks East (white blaze) in Newark-Pequannock Watershed. Choose your length by one of three turnabouts and head back to the parking lot via Hanks West. Medium difficulty. Bring poles if you use ‘em! PS. Permit required for this trail. Highlight’s Choice
For you, fellow hiker, I recommend you explore the extraordinary Bearfort Mountain loop in Waywayanda State Park. Park at P5 on Stephens Road, and hike to Spring North (blue blaze). Follow it to Terrance Pond Red (red blaze) & head back to Stephens Rd. It’s a few hours of perfect solitude. Sturdy boots required. If you can’t get out on Take A Hike Day, keep this in your pack pocket for another day: it’s unforgettable!
